Fibreglassing my pepakura helmets
« on: May 23, 2011, 08:27:17 PM »
This is so much fun! I've just come in from laying down some cloth and resin into three helmets - two navy talker Rebel Fleet Trooper helmets, a swoop for one of them, a Republic Commando helmet and a Judge Dredd helmet. No pictures just yet, but will take some in a day or two.

I ordered the fibreglass resin and cloth from NZ Fibreglass Ltd a couple of weeks ago. Their 4kg kit worked out at $105 including freight to Wanganui - which makes it about one eighth of the cost of getting it from M10!

The pepakura is coming on great guns as well. I'm so thrilled at how much fun it all is, and how easy once you get the hang of it. I'm presently working on the Republic Commando pep I bought from Hass_Dardo on the 501st Clone Trooper forums - well worth the $8!

As I say, pictures to follow, but just was so stoked at how it's going that I had to post. :D

That's http://www.nzfibreglass.co.nz/

:D

Good skills Phil.
looking forward to seeing some shots, the last ones you sent me were just the Pep of the RC helmet.

shame you paid for pep's but its only $8 as you say, as I have a full HD version of the RC now.

I have a swag more SW and None SW peps for you if you want them.
some I havent even released on the 405th/soaringHammer yet.

NZfiberglass is who I use too, they are great

By the way.
Try RONDO, believe me it will save you hours of time at the FG phase :)
I'll email you some example photos of my latest project when I get home so you can see how Rondo works.

Thanks for the DVD's btw

Just a quick couple of shots until I make some more progress this weekend.

I've been using shiny card which I get from a local printer. It's the sort that they use for printing business cards on - nice and shiny and it glues almost instantly with superglue - it actually seems to work even better if you breathe on the glue before putting the two surfaces together. I've heard that this starts the curing reaction.

The helmet on the yellow basket is a second Navy Talker pattern, with an external rim to stiffen it up and make the edge easier to trim after the fibreglass sets.

The Dredd helmet is slightly too small, but it's one of the first peps I did and I've got to finish it off now - too much fun invested in it so far! There's a stormtrooper calf in the background - not sure if I'll take that much further until I size it against a 'real' one.

The Republic Commando helmet needs the back plate and brow piece added, but that'll be once the basic unit is fibreglassed and sanded.

Cheers, Phil

done! check you email.
and i know what you mean about a mountain of unfinished projects, I have a garage full of them.... lol
I really should pull finger and finish them, that way I would have a good half dozen new costumes for Geddon.

Unfortunatly real life and my partners costumes come first.

Making progress slowly. Now on to sanding the raised corners off and then will start on building the flat facets up with bog.
It's a lot of work, but I must say it's still very enjoyable. It's far more satisfying to spend ages and quite a few dollars on making these, compared to the Ep3 helmet I bought off TradeMe for $85!

It comes from TradeMe - I suspect it made its way here from StarFortress or similar. Pretty rough, but wearable. In other words - nice recast...
